After a restful morning we decided to see what there was in Redding to see. This is what we found. This is the Sundial Bridge. It has a glass walkway across the Sacremento River. It is a suspension bridge with cables that run from one side of the bridge to the other, through the bridge to the sundial. It is lighted at night and so pretty!!
A long with the bridge there is a place called Turtle Bay. It is really a lovely walk through so many different plants and trees. We only saw a small part of the 300 acre park. We took pictures of a monkey puzzle tree. Very unique. But I thought you might enjoy seeing this tree which is a type of willow tree which they formed into a lookout tree.
This was very interesting. There are benches inside for a nice cool break from the 80 degree temps. While at Turtle Bay we learned that rock from this area was put on a 9.5 mile convayer belt to build the Shasta Dam. So of course we had to go see what we could learn about the dam that was built from 1938 to 1945 and is the second largest dam in the USA. The largest is Coolidge Dam in Idaho.
We learned about the building of the dam by watching a history film. It is amazing the technology they used back then. There is enough concrete in this dam to put a three foot wide, four inch thick sidewalk around the world at the equator and it was pour one cubic yard at a time after the rock was ground and turned into cement from the convayer belt.
We also were able to see Kristin and meet Nathan, and Kristins mother. They were busy getting ready for the wedding. Also got a short visit with Shelby. So good to see her. Jeremy stayed home with the children but got to see pictures of them.
